Everyone has seen Los Altos High School’s student conduct liaison, Julie Corzine, cruising around campus on her golf cart. Often, she has a passenger: her beloved dog, Dixie.

When Julie expressed that she wanted a proper drawing of her pet, art teacher Christine An held a contest for National Art Honor Society (NAHS) students to see who could best draw LAHS’s beloved golf cart dog.

“Everyone knows of Julie and her dog on campus,” An said. “Being an art teacher, I thought it would be fun to allow students to make  hand-drawn figure designs.”

Julie brought Dixie in during one of the NAHS meetings so students could begin their designs and get an idea of what they would like to draw. In exchange for volunteer hours, students were then given a couple of weeks to submit two of their best pieces featuring the dog.

“When I saw all of the artwork, my jaw was literally on the floor,” Julie said. “I was so impressed with the thoughtfulness and skill that these students showed.”

Dixie chose the winning piece when she indicated it with a brush of her nose, according to Julie. Dixie picked a piece by senior Ariana Ruiz, who was crowned the winner of the contest.

“I got inspiration from this yearbook photo meme,” Ariana said. “I saw a picture of a dog wearing glasses, so I thought I could combine them.”

Ariana’s final piece is a black-and-white pencil sketch of Dixie wearing her blue coat and large ski goggles. Satisfied with Dixie’s art, Julie showed the drawing to other staff members and later printed more copies of the artwork in Ms. An’s room.

“I had a lot of fun participating in the contest and it was great to get to know Julie more,” said Ariana. “I’d encourage more people to join NAHS — it’s very fun!”
